Int’l judo tournament draws eight foreign countries, territories

(SGT-HCMC) The 16th HCMC International Judo Tournament will kick off on Saturday with the participation of Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and Vietnam.
The tournament will take place at the Phan Dinh Phung Indoor Stadium in HCMC with 94 male and 68 female judo athletes competing.
Athletes will compete in 18 weight categories. Men will compete in the 50kg, 55kg, 60 kg, 66kg, 73kg, 81kg, 90kg, 100kg and above 100kg categories. Women’s weights are 42kg, 45kg, 48kg, 52kg, 57kg, 63kg, 70kg, 78kg and above 78 kg.
Vietnamese teams will compete in all weight categories at the tournament, said Hoang Viet Hung, deputy head of the organizing committee.
Vietnam will have five teams. The Vietnam 1 team is composed of the national team’s members while the Vietnam 2, Vietnam 3 and Vietnam 4 teams include younger members of national teams. The HCMC team also includes members of national teams, besides just HCMC players.
Hung, also the president of the Vietnam Judo Federation, said that the determination of Vietnam’s line-up for the Southeast Asian Games, which will be held this November and December in Thailand, would be based on the results of the tournament.
In related news, the Vietnam Judo Federation has won a bid to host the world junior tournament in October of next year in HCMC, the organizing committee said last week.
The World Judo Junior Tournament is expected to attract more than 1,500 international athletes from 90 countries and territories from around the world.
The organizers are getting ready for the country’s biggest tournament, but they are waiting for official approval from the International Judo Federation.
The HCMC-based Liberty Hotel chain is sponsoring the annual tournament which will be broadcast live on the HTV 2 channel.
At the 15th International Judo Tournament last year, Vietnam earned four gold metals, five silvers and 13 bronzes, ranking third after leaders Korea, who secured 11 gold metals and one silver medal, and second place Japan, who bagged five gold metals, one silver metal and one bronze metal in the contest that drew almost 162 athletes.
