Maiden World Cup medal in judo for India

NEW DELHI: Kalpana Devi Thoudam has become the first Indian judoka to clinch a World Cup medal by grabbing a bronze in the below 52kg category at the just-concluded edition in Tashkent , Uzbekistan .

The World Cup, which concluded yesterday, is the official event of the International Judo Federation and one of the Olympic Qualifying events.

More 100 judokas from 17 Counties participated in this World Cup, the Judo Federation of India said in a statement.

The Manipuri girl, working with the ITBP, is preparing for the Asian Games in China at the Sports Authority of India center in Bhopal.

She earlier won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Judo Championships in Singapore and was an Asian junior champion two years ago.

Besides, she is also a reigning national champion.
