Calling all Thurrock judo players

JUDO: The Russians are coming... to the Southend Judo Club international event next month.

A team from the eastern European country are the latest to confirm they will be taking part in the two-day judo extravaganza on Saturday, November 27, and Sunday, November 28.

A representative from the Russian team jetted in to meet Southend Judo Club’s Pascal Knaapen in London to finalise details of the Russians’ partipation.

And the Russians are likely to be facing their old rivals the USA after the Americans announced a team of elite judo players will be travelling to compete at Southend Leisure and Tennis Centre.

Southend Judo Club hope the event will be the largest of its kind held in the United Kingdon.

“This is event different from any other in the UK, or the world for that matter,” said club chairman John Horrigan.

“The event is truly open to all standards of judo, from the eight-year-old beginner to the world’s elite.”

Horrigan has also been discussing having blind and visually impaired player in action with Paralympic silver medalist Ian Rose.

The club also hopes to have some former Olympians conducting a training camp on the Saturday evening.

Entry to the event will be £4 for adults and £2 for children, and there are plans to raise money for charity over the weekend too.
