Judo club throws down plan for schools move

A JUDO club hopes to take the martial art into schools on the back of a £7,000 grant.
Northbrook Judo Club received the money from the Jack Petchey foundation, which makes grants to projects which benefit people aged from 11 to 25.
At present, Northbrook members train at Carey Scott Scout Hall, Plaistow Lane, Bromley, and venues in Lewisham and Blackheath.
It also has clubs at Cator Park School, Lennard Road, Beckenham; Beaverwood Sch- ool for Girls, Beaverwood Road, Chislehurst, and Burnt Ash Primary School, Rangewood Road, Bromley.
The club aims to use the grant to extend its Judo in Schools Programme.
Instructor and club vice-president Gary Currier said: "Judo is currently under-represented on the school sports curriculum.
"We think there is a massive opportunity to promote it, with all the related benefits it can bring to young people and society.
"These include self-respect, respect for others, confidence, positive values, self-defence, fitness, competition and lifelong friendships."
