Three judo athletes off to Senior Nationals

Two female athletes to join Zamotine at sport’s top level

The sport of judo in Fort Saskatchewan is quickly gaining notoriety on the national stage.

After having one athlete – Serge Zamotine – from the city’s Tolide Judo Kwai club make the national team last year, the club has developed a pair of female athletes who have been selected to the Judo Alberta team for the Senior National Championship set for Quebec City next month.

Jaana Merivirta and Sarah Purschke will join Zamotine – who currently trains at the national team facility in Quebec – on the provincial team at the tournament that runs May 24 and 25. Following the tournament, they will also take part in the three-day national training camp.

Merivirta will compete in the under-52 kilogram female division, while Purschke will be in the under-63 kg female category.

Zamotine will compete in the male under-60 kg division.The announcement is yet another feather in the cap of the club run and taught by Keith Bibbey and follows on the heels of more great performances from the club’s athletes less than two weeks ago.

At the Katsuta Kup in Raymond on Apr. 12, the club won a total of 20 medals in the tournament that closes out the judo season in the province.
In the Junior Girls division, for those born from 1998 to 2000, Aleksa White took silver in the under-30 kg category with Kirsten Thompson earning a bronze. Then in the under-34 kg category, it was Nicole Regnier winning silver and Miah Fast took silver in the 42-kg and over category.

In the Junior Girls (1995-97) division, Cassidy Norris and sister Meaghan were gold and silver medal winners respectively in the under-42 kg category, while Hannah Goodwill won silver and bronze went to Kassidy Fast in the under-46 kg category.

There were two groups in the 46-kg and over category, with Jacklyn Geislinger winning a bronze in the A pool and Kyla Fast taking gold in the B pool.And in the Juvenile Women’s division (1990-92), Erja Merivirta won gold in the under-57 kg category with teammate Jade McLachlin taking the silver.

Over in the Junior Boys (1997-98) division, it was Austin Thompson taking a silver medal in the under-30 kg category, while Evan Turner took gold in the under-42 kg category and Zachary Frechette won bronze in the 42-kg and over category.

For the Junior Boys (1995-96) division, Tyson Thompson won gold in the under-34 kg category with Alex Johnson getting a bronze medal in the A pool of the under-42 kg category.

There were three medals taken in the Juvenile Mens division.Drew Fast won gold in the under-51 kg category, while Colton Hall took gold and Brett Regnier got the bronze medal in the under-55 kg category.Back in February, members represented Zone 5 at the 2008 Alberta Winter Games in Leduc, bringing home four golds, a silver and a bronze.jdwyer@bowesnet.com
