Wollongong's self-styled Greatest Poetry Megastars in the Universe hardly fit the stereotype of poets as tortured, romantic souls. And that's exactly the Bracket Creeps' intention. With their boy-band looks, cheery outlook and matching purple suits, the University of Wollongong creative writing graduates are intent on making poetry accessible to the masses, if they could just tone down the language.
"Our poetry is crass, a little bit blue with quite a bit of obscenity," said Daniel East, one of the four Bracket Creeps.
"We have played a few schools and it's good, the kids think we are really cool, but one of the things we get pulled up on is our swearing."
Next month the poetry quartet of East, Lachlan Williams, Jimmy Andrews and Patrick Lenton will graduate from school classrooms to the Sydney Opera House Studio where they'll perform their comic-poetry-rap routine as part of the inaugural Night Words Festival.
The three-day celebration from March 6 to 8 at Sydney's most prestigious performance space is the brainchild of former Thirroul poet Miles Merrill.Described by Merrill as a "cosmopolitan corroboree", the wordfest also features performance poet Tug Dumbly, novelist Linda Jaivin and singer-songwriter Kev Carmody.
The Bracket Creeps will perform as part of a team slam night where poetry becomes sport as artists compete with five-minute slabs of poetry."I don't think any of us make a living out of poetry to sustain ourselves, but it takes up a lot of our time and keeps us off the streets," Andrews said.
