Cuban Judo Athletes Off to Hamburg Super World Cup this Weekend
Havana, Feb 21 (acn) Cuban judo men’s and women’s squads will be competing at the Hamburg Super World Cup in Germany this weekend as part of their tour of Europe in preparation for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Judo athletes Yanet Bermoy, (48 kilos), Yagnelis Mestre (52), Yasmani Piker (60) and Yordanis Arencibia (66) will compete on Friday. Bermoy, the 2005 Cairo world champ and the Rio de Janeiro 2007 silver medalist, is one of the favorites, along with veteran Arencibia, winner of a bronze in Athens in 2004 and a silver in the Rio World Cup.
On Saturday, entering the tatami from Cuba will be Yurisleidis Lupetey (57), Anaisis Hernandez (63), Yalennis Castillo (70), Ronald Girones (73) and Asley Gonzalez (81). While Yurisel Laborde (78), Idalis Ortiz (+78), Jorge Benavides (90), Oreidis Despaigne (100) and Oscar Brasion (+100) will compete on Sunday.
Results of the tour of Europe so far for the female pupils of coach Ronaldo Veitia evidence four golds (Laborde and Ortiz won two each), one silver (by Yalennis Castillo) and two bronze medals (Bermoy and Hernandez) in tournaments in Arlon, Belgium (3-1-0), Paris, Fran.
