Poetry season begins with Women of Ozarks slam

The 2008 Poetry Slam season will kick off Thursday with the first Women of the Ozarks Poetry Slam. The event is at The Outland, 326 South Ave. Women poets who would like to take the stage should register at info@wellfedhead.com or call 832-9333 as soon as possible.

Doors open for the slam at 7 p.m., with an open mic at 7:30. The women’s slamoff will start at 8:30. Admission is $5.

The winner of this slam will go on to the Women of the World Poetry Slam in Detroit in March. Also performing in Springfield Thursday will be Ed Mabrey, the 2007 Individual World Poetry Slam Champion. He is a two-time Haiku National Slam Champion and has given poetry workshops at universities and for state and national poetry organizations.

Mabrey will be at the Creamery Arts Center 4-5 p.m. talking about the art of performance poetry. The event is free and open to the public.

Mabrey will also take the stage and share his poetry at 8 p.m., before the women only slam.
