(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – The following are the results from the first day of competition at the Korea Cup on Friday in Jeju.
Travis Stevens (Glenville, N.Y. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center) won his first match in the 81kg division against Chi-Hang Au (HKG) by a pair of waza-aris (half-point each), but lost in the quarter-finals to 2004 Junior World Champion Jae-Bum Kim (KOR). Stevens and Kim went into Golden Score (overtime), but Kim won the match by a yuko (quarter-point), throwing Stevens with an o uchi gari (major outer leg throw).
Kim would go on to win the gold medal, but Stevens lost by a waza-ari in the repechage to six-time World Cup medalist Antonio Ciano (ITA) who would go on to win the bronze.
Four-time Pan Am medalist Sayaka Matsumoto (El Cerrito, Calif. / NYAC / East Bay Judo Institute) was thrown with an uchimata (inner thigh throw) for a yuko score by 2006 Asian Games medalist Kelbet Nurgazina (KAZ) in her first match of the 48kg division. Nurgazina lost in the next round, eliminating Matsumoto.
