Medals delight for Dartford judo stars

Medals delight for Dartford judo stars
DARTFORD Judo Club started the new season strongly with medal successes at the Heart of England Judo Championships held at the National Indoor Arena arena in Birmingham.
Thirteen Dartford members were in action with an impressive eight medals won by the end of the tournament.
Winning a medal in this competition also forms part of the criteria for selection to the British Judo Associations World Class Start Squad.
Ryan Cottom (junior boys over-50kg) won all of his preliminary fights by ippon maximum score to reach the final of his weight.
Cottom made short work of his opponent, throwing him for ippon with a shoulder move in less than 30 seconds to defend his title and the gold he won on his debut at last year's event.
Bradley Love (young men band B under-66kg) managed to improve on his bronze medal success at the previous year's event.
Having moved up a weight group, Love dominated his category with strong holds defeating his early opponents.
Love had a tough final against Myers of Parkwood, but clinched the gold with a win by superiority of scores.
Amelia Cook (young women band C under-40kg) was looking to add to her successes throughout the year.
Cook did not disappoint and proved to be one to watch by beating all opponents easily to reach the final.
Fidgeon of Newburn worked hard, but Cook's strong grips and technique proved to much for her.
A small throw followed by a hold from Cook resulted in an Ippon score to end the contest and the group with Cook awarded the gold.
Taylor Bell (young men band C under-60kg) was looking for a repeat performance of the gold he won last time around.
Bell progressed well to reach the final where he drew tough opposition from Kawamoto of Ealing.
Bell gained points during the fight, but by the end Kawamoto had the higher score, so Bell had to settle for the silver.
Craig Holmes (young men band D under-90kg) has medalled in every contest since his return from long term illness this year.
Holmes made easy work of the early rounds to secure a place in the final where he met Taylor from Hardy Spicer.
Both have fought previously with an even record of wins against each other.
The contest lasted the full duration and his opponent had a higher score, so Holmes had to settle for silver on this occasion.
Harry Painter (young men band B under-46kg) drew national squad player Clark-Harewood of Moberly in the first round and worked hard, but was overpowered by his opponent's experience.
Painter fought through the repercharge with three confident wins to reach the final, which he won with an explosive ippon scoring throw to take the bronze.
Shane Tyler (young men band B under-66kg) progressed to the semi-finals, having won his pool.
Tyler was drawn against fellow clubmate Love, who had looked equally determined during the day.
The ability of both competitors was evident, but Love was the victor on scores, securing his place in the final with Tyler claiming the bronze.
Casey Belsey (young men band D under-55kgs) won all his matches comfortably to contest the semi-final.
Belsey drew a strong opponent in Guest from Grimsby and unfortunately found himself on the end of a dangerous armlock and was forced to submit.
He claimed the bronze in his next fight against Jones of Devizes with an ippon win.
Five Dartford Judo Club members gained creditable fifth places, just missing the medals.
They were: Benjamin Wood-Gluck (young men band C under-50kg), Frazer Chamberlain (young men band D under-60kg), Heather Stewart (young women band C under-52kg), Charlie Whittaker (young men band B under-38kg), Andrew Panayi (young men band C under-55kg).
