Two competitors, Dalton Cantrell, age five and Austin Dulay, age 11, won the “Courage Award." “I’m proud of the boys’ performance in their first competition. They overcame their fear of the fight. It takes real courage to compete in an individual sport in front of hundreds of spectators,” said Fred Barnett, head Judo Coach. Alex Teal, age 11 has been training and competing for 18 months. He won the “Outstanding Throw” award and took home a gold trophy. Tyler Biggs, junior team captain coached the junior team members to victory. Four fighters from Panther’s Den senior Judo team competed in both Judo and Jiu Jitsu. “Chad Hawkins showed the most improvement as a fighter,” said Barnett, “he used technique, skill and strategy versus raw strength.” Marcel Adamski, from Hamburg, Germany competed and won a gold and silver trophy. This was Adamski’s first Jiu Jitsu competition. “It was a different scoring system than Judo,” said Adamski, “but it was fun to fight again after not competing for five years. Every time I visit the United States I get to compete.” The junior and senior team has been practicing for 18 months a combination of Judo and Jiu Jitsu. Several members of Panther’s Den Jiu Jitsu team came to support and coach their team mates.
