British title for Cantrill

British title for Cantrill
HEREFORD's 4th Dan Black Belt Stan Cantrill has been enjoying a double celebration after returning from the World Masters Judo Championships held in São Paulo Brazil with a bronze medal and then carrying off a gold at the British Masters.
Cantrill battled his way through five rounds at the British championships in Thetford, Norfolk before seeing off an opponent from Pinewood Judo Club, near Bracknell, in the final.
There was disappointment, however, for Cantrill's fellow Hereford competitor Andy Morris who was making his comeback from injury at the competition and had to be content with fifth place.
In Brazil, Cantrill fought his way through, winning by maximum points, only to come up against a German powerlifting champion.
Cantrill then had to fight all the way back via the repechage, ending up fighting Great Britain teammate Bill Sergeant from Dartford.
Cantrill won by a minor 5 point score in extra time, to secure the bronze medal.
"As judo is a minority sport it means I have to be self financing and so would like to thank via all my sponsors including all my relations, VCRB in Birmingham, the Welsh Judo Association and National Coach Neil Adams, and the Royal National College for allowing me to use their gym after induction," said Cantrill.
"I would also like to thank Andy Morris and all the guys at the judo club for allowing me to throw them time after time."
Cantrill is now back training hard for the Romanian, European and Welsh Masters which all take place before the end of the year.
