County judo star takes a bow on the Beeb
EAST Lothian judo star Euan Burton took a bow on the BBC on Wednesday for his sporting achievements this year which have seen him book a place in Great Britain’s team for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The 28-year-old, originally from Pencaitland, joined the likes of three-time world rowing champion Katherine Grainger and World Championship 400m relay bronze medallist, Lee McConnell, at Glasgow’s City Halls on Monday for the National Lottery World Class Award’s evening.
The awards were broadcast on BBC2 on Wednesday evening at 7pm.
Burton – who won a bronze medal at the Judo World Championships in Rio, Brazil two weeks ago, as well as a second bronze at the European Championships and gold at Moscow’s Super World Cup earlier this year – was one of 61 Scottish athletes recognised with National Lottery funding.
Former Ross High pupil Burton will receive financial backing for day-to-day expenses and coaching costs as the Beijing and London Games tick ever closer.
He said: “It’s fantastic to see so many successful Scottish sportsmen and women in the same room.
“The funding has been great for us and will allow us to push on to the next level. Hopefully we can inspire the next generation of stars in our particular sports.”
The National Lottery World Class Awards was the first time Scottish athletes who receive funding through UK Sports were recognised together.
