Rockford wrestler heads to judo tournament
Monday, August 27, 2007
Rockford's Alex Murray is headed to the University of Chicago to begin his college wrestling career.
. But this weekend, Murray will travel to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to compete in the Fall Classic Ladder Judo Tournament. Murray, a black belt in Judo, has had a busy year. He was part of a U.S. judo all-star team that competed against a team from Japan in Miami in the spring. He took second place in the 73-kilo weight class at the United States Junior Judo Nationals on July 8 in Indianapolis. And on Aug. 18, Murray competed in Pussan, South Korea, in the Ha Cup, a tournament of international all-star teams.
If Murray, who placed second at the Division 1 state wrestling meet in March, does well this weekend, it will put him on the radar for an Olympic trial.
