THE Japanese government has been praised for supporting judo, which has led to the development of the sport in the country. The Secretary General of the Tanzania Judo Association (TJA), Kashinde Buundala, said the standard of the game has risen to medium level since the Japanese started promoting the sport in the country in 2000. "South Africa, Morroco and Tunisia are leading countries and chances are that we can attain their standard," he said. He said they have 200 judokas countrywide, 150 of them are active from five clubs of Jurka (Kisutu), Umoja (Mwananyamala), Flamingo (Don Bosco), Pentagon (Segerea) and Vudocan (Zanzibar). Buudala made the remarks yesterday when introducing four Japanese judo experts, Kazuhiko Kuroda, Ryuzo Tetsuya, Koji Komuro and Katsuhiko Tetsuka who are in the country to promote the sport. Judo was among the disciplinesthat Tanzania competed in during t he just ended All African Games in Algiers, Algeria but two judokas bowed out without any medals. Kashinde however said lack of resources and poor infrastructure are major problems frustrating their efforts of taking the sport to the high level. Four Japanese Judo experts arrived in the country on Thursday under the programme of the Japan foundation for the purpose of encouraging Judo in Tanzania and to promote cultural exchanges between the two countries. Addressing the media at the Tanzania Information Services Auditorium, the Director of the delegation, Kazuhiko Kuroda, said they expect to be in the country till August 7, 2007 where they would hold two demonstrations to the public. He said that the first demonstration would be held tomorrow at Don Bosco Youth Centre in Upanga Dar es Salaam starting from 10:00am with the Minister for information,Culture and Sports, Hon Muhammed Seif Khatib, as the guest of honour.
