Girl takes silver medal at international judo meetJingle, jangle was the sound the numerous medals made around her neck as they clanged together when she walked.Madison Montgomery, 8, of Burleson won 15 gold, silver and bronze medals and two trophies over the course of one year and one month for her skills in judo. The latest addition to her collection was a silver medal from a tournament in Florida where at least 22 other countries’ competitors battled for the top spot. Although she didn’t bring home the gold medal in her class, Madison’s parents beamed as they talked about how proud they were of their daughter.
Candice and Eugene Montgomery said they have a lot of fun with Madison in judo. Eugene said he gets very excited while watching Madison playing in the competitive matches, and Candice helps Madison practice from time to time. As far as cost is concerned, it’s an inexpensive sport, Candice said, unless you calculate in the traveling.
In July, Madison won two other silver medals. She received one in Indianapolis, Ind., for the junior national championship, and then in San Antonio she captured another for the USA Junior Olympics tournament. The cost of traveling to all those tournaments adds up, Eugene said.
Madison loves the sport, and that is one reason why her parents allow her to flourish in it. She said she has a lot of fun, meets a lot of new friends, and feels the need to spend every day she can practicing judo.
When the family began with Madison in the sport, they didn’t know much about judo. That changed over the past year.
“We’ve learned a lot this year about this sport,” Eugene said.He said it is a family affair, and they all look forward to the next tournament in October.
