BRITAIN UNFORTUNATE NOT TO ADD TO HAUL

BRITAIN UNFORTUNATE NOT TO ADD TO HAUL
Both Craig Ewers, of the University of Wales in Cardiff, and Andrew Burns, who studies at Bath, were unfortunate not to win medals for Britain in judo, on days seven and eight of the World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand.
Ewers fought Segiu Toma of Romania for bronze in the -73kg class but lost out on a podium place, whilst Andrew Burns suffered a similar fate in the open weight.
Burns saw off Vyacheslav Pereteyko of Uzbekistan in his last eight clash before losing to Japan’s Satoshi Ishll of Japan in the semi-final. Vitaliy Polyanskyy of the Ukraine was his opponent in the bronze medal match and it was the Ukrainian who went on to triumph.
Elsewhere, in golf, it was a good day for Britain’s men as they advanced three places up the leader board to move into fifth place, 10 shots behind leaders Japan. Charlie Ford (Tennessee) produced an excellent 3-under par 69 and when added to Scott Borrowman’s 70 and Gavin Dear’s (both University of Stirling) 74, left them with a 3-round total of 657 (+9). Britain’s women did not have as good a day although they still lie second on the leader board in the team event. Team manager Raleigh Gowrie is excited by the prospect of a close finish for all on the final day’s play tomorrow.
“The teams are bunching up nicely at the top of the board and it’s getting interesting,” said Gowrie. “I’m looking forward to seeing how our players handle the pressure of tomorrow,” he added.
Both Britain’s football teams will play off for seventh place tomorrow. Graeme Dell’s men face Uruguay, whilst Laura Harvey’s side will be hoping to erase the memory of an opening game loss when they face China once again.
In water polo, Britain finished 12th after losing 17-9 to Russia today, whilst in diving, Thomas Owens made the semi-final of the 1m springboard.
Meanwhile Britain’s fencers concluded their tournament with the team events. Both the men’s and women’s foil teams made the last eight before losing to Russia and Japan respectively, whilst the men’s sabre team bowed out at the last 16 stage.
As well as football and golf, Britain will continue to fight for honours in diving tomorrow and Saturday, whilst the judo squad will compete in their respective team events.
