JOHN McFetrich (17) of Boglestone Judo Club put on two top drawer displays of judo last week to secure medals at the British Under-20 Championships and the Belgium Youth Tournament. The British event saw him fight against the elite of British youths’ judo. After an early defeat against James Austin (19), the current number 1 in this category, John took part in the reporcharge rounds and eventually secured a hard-fought bronze medal, an excellent result
Following on from his success at the British championships, John was invited to join the British Youth squad in Belgium, a considerable honour for this talented sportsman,. Here he was to raise his game and an excellent display of judo took him through to a place in the final. The long break before the final in the early evening didn’t go down well with John who was sluggish at the start of the fight, struggling to find the earlier form of the day. He was to be defeated with a koka (three-point score ) to collect a silver medal. Although John now has a well earned rest from competition for the next few months he continues his training at the Judo centre of excellence in Largs and at Boglestone. Boglestone Judo Club practise Monday, Wednesday and Friday 7-9pm. For further details contact Robert Sharp senior, club coach, on 791295.
