Guwahati, Jan 7: Three days may not have been enough for national men’s judo coach Virender Yadav to tutor the Assam judokas but he was able to gauge the skill and temperament of the players during his brief stint. Yadav suggested that the talent pool of Assam is in need of proper nourishment and infrastructure to enhance the state’s medal prospects in the forthcoming 33rd National Games.
Yadav, who was here last week on his return from Manipur, felt the Assam players lacked in strength and endurance but were “good learners of the art”. “Give them good nourishment and proper infrastructure and they will do wonders with the level of skill they possess,” Yadav said after his three-day stint with the state probabales.
He felt the Assam judokas possessed the sound basics necessary for champions.
“It is a good sign that the Assam judokas catch things very quickly. Their only shortcoming is poor endurance and strength,” he added.
Yadav said if provided with adequate nourishment a month’s time would be enough to prepare the state players for the Games. An eight-time national champion Yadav started with a SAF Games gold at Dhaka in 1993 and went on to win the Commonwealth Championship bronze in 1998 and SAARC Games gold at Lucknow in 1999.
It is ironical that the Assam organisers, who are preparing to host the Games extravagantly, are apathetic towards coaching and contingent preparation.
When the organisers are preparing to present gifts worth Rs 1.73 crore to the participants, the state sports associations are running from pillar to post to manage funds for coaching and contingent preparation.
Talking about the infrastructure, he appreciated the new indoor stadium at Rudra Singha Sports Complex, which is also the new venue for judo in the National Games.
“At first, I was astonished to see the condition of the floor at the present practice venue (ABITA Indoor Stadium). The only question that came to my mind was whether Assam will be able to host the National Games as per schedule, having postponed it twice. But when I was taken to the new indoor stadium, I liked it very much,” Yadav said.
“However, if the Assam judokas continue to practice in the present venue, I don’t feel they will be left physically fit to contest in the National Games because of the hazardous condition of the floor,” he added.
The All Assam Judo Association has been claiming a rich medal prospect in the National Games with the help of at least 12 judokas from Manipur, including Y. Brojeswari Devi.
