Judo: O-Nami Judo Club dominate national championships

Judo: O-Nami Judo Club dominate national championships

In the St Aloysius Sport Hall the MJF organised two of its major activities. It has become a tradition that all judokas under 12 years meet the patron of the federation in the Festival synonymous to Fra Andrew Bertie. Around 100 boys and girls crowed on the two mats along with Andrew and the Maltese Coaches to show “daddy, mummy, auntie, and granny how much judo they know and how they can throw or hold their judo friends”, then all in one file to stand on the highest podium receiving the golden medal for their achievements directly from Andrew Bertie. In the meanwhile on mat No 1 the National Championships started. These championships are divided into 4 age groups, Espoir, Youth, Juniors and Seniors. Then each age group is divided into weight categories. In all 24 categories were contested and 17 were won by O-Nami Judo Club, to become the strongest judo club for 2006.These competitions are now very important, as through the championships the Maltese judoka can collect their points which now serve for their examination for a higher grade. These championships are also important, as according to the final results the successful judoka could qualify to form part of National Team Pool from which the federation selects the national team to compete in international events.Senior male categoriesThe - 60kg category was won by Brent Law. This category was highly contested and Brent from O-Nami Judo Club had to compete very hard to win against young Alex Attard also from O-Nami, who is still 14 years old. Alex is ear marked to represent Malta in the next European Cadet Championships which are to be organised in Malta next July. Aaron Bezzina(O-Nami), 15 years old won bronze but he was certainly one of the protagonists in these championships. The - 66kg category was dominated by Jerome Zammit also of O-Nami and convincingly won against two promising young judokas Kevin Bamber of Tigne Judo Club and of O-Nami, who won silver and bronze respectively. In the - 73kg category, Rainer Bonnici from Hibernians Budokwai Judo Club, who last month won against reigning champion Edward Attard, won the under 73kg title. The 81kg category was won by Chris Zarb from Tigne JC, his opponents were two judokas Christian Summut and Steven Bonnici coming from the newly registered club St. Martins Judo Club.Neville Thomas from O-Nami Judo Club won the under 90kkg category and his co-club member Chris Vella took the +100kg category.Female senior categoryIn the female seniors Joanna Camillieri from Hibernians Budokwai Judo Club, confronted the reigning and Olympian Marcon Bezzina of O-Nami JC. These two judokas know each other very well and have just returned from a 10 day training stage in Bath University Center of Excellence. During the fight it was difficult for anyone to throw the other cleanly but at the end Marcon’s experience triumphed and Marcon won with points.Espoir, Cadets and JuniorsIn the Junior category Alex Attard of O-Nami was the one who has the best results together Jerome Zammit also from O-Nami, who won their categories convincingly. In the Cadets age group the winners were Maverick Scerri ( under 50kg), Aaron Bezzina(under 55kg), Alex Attard(under 60kg), Justin Zarb(under 66kg), all judokas are from O-Nami Judo Club. Chris Zarb (under 90kg) of Tigne Judo Club.In the Espoir age group there were many entries of the young promising athletes, and here we high light Adrian Bonnici from Hibernian Budokwiai Judo Club. We will hear more of Adrian if he continues his successful trend. The Federation is very satisfied of this sector because it proves that there are promising judokas also for the future.
