WGC Judo Club's juniors have continued their winning ways with gold and silver medals in a recent competition.Club members Joel Flynn, 10, and eight-year-old Tommy Almond both won medals at the British Schools' Judo Association Championships held in Berkhamsted.Joel Flynn won all his fights with the maximum 'Ippon' score on his way to winning gold in the U42 kg category.Tommy Almond won silver in the U30 kg category.A Year 5 pupil at Welwyn St Mary's School, Joel Flynn is also a member of the county festival winning Welwyn Under-10 rugby squad. He has been practising judo at the WGC club since he was six and occasionally trains with the St Albans club as well and is a yellow belt, 6th mon. However, to win his second gold in only his third competition is a fine achievement.WGC club colleague Tommy Almond attends Haberdashers' Aske's School in Elstree. He trains once a week at the Gosling club and is already a red belt, grade 2nd mon.His proud dad said: "Tommy only joined the British Judo Association last September and is still learning judo, so winning his second silver medal this year is a great achievement for him." WGC junior club coach Andy Bonfield said: "The boys have continued to do the club proud."The Junior Club meets at Gosling Sports Centre on Friday evenings.
