WHITEHAVEN
Judo Club won four gold, two silver and five bronze medals in an impressive performance in the Open Championships at Millom.
Club secretary Tony Kirkbride was delighted with the success of the club’s fighters, some of whom had to conquer bigger and more experienced opponents.
He said: “The problems, caused by pooling left some of the Whitehaven boys’ team in a large pool, with fighters heavier and older.
“Despite not getting medal placing, all the lads fought well and put on a good show.”
He paid tribute to Nicholas Maudling, Alex Kane, Joshua Brenan and Alex Hargreaves, who finished outside the medals, adding: “This year’s surprise was Sophia Brenan.”
Sophia, seven, from St Bees, has been doing judo for two years and was the youngest in her fighting pool but won all her fights with a combination of hip throws and hold-downs. She took the first gold the day.
Results: Girls’ novice under 40kg: Sophia Brenan, gold; girls’ novice under 57kg: Charlotte Horner, silver.
