May 29 2006
Canada won five medals on Friday at the Pan American judo championships taking place this week in Buenos Aires. The competition is one of four tournaments at which Canadian judokas can earn qualifying points for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Amy Cotton of Nova Scotia posted Canada's top result with a silver medal in women's 78 kilos. She lost to Edinancy Silva of Brazil in the final.
In women's 63 kilos, Marie-Helène Chisholm of Port-Cartier, Que., took the bronze earning three victories in four bouts. She lost a semifinal to Yaritza Abel of Cuba who went on to win gold. Chisholm defeated Vania Ishii of Brazil for the bronze.
"It was a very close bout,'' said Canadian national team coach Nicolas Gill. "The category has the deepest field in the entire tournament. There's several high quality competitors and it was a good showing for Marie-Helène.''
In women's 70 kilos, Catherine Roberge of Beauport, Que., lost her semifinal bout in overtime to Kelly Silva of Brazil then defeated Sarai Mendoza of El Salvador in the bronze medal match. Olia Berger was fifth in women's 78 kilos.
On the men's side, Tyler Boras earned the silver medal in men's 81 kilos. He won three bouts before losing the final to Olympic bronze medallist Flavio Canto of Brazil.
"Tyler capitalized on a favorable draw but still he won all his bouts until the final,'' said Gill.
Alexandru Ciupe added a bronze in men's 100 kilos while Trevor McAlpine was fifth in 100 kilos and over and Maxime Roberge was eliminated in the first round in 100 kilos and over.
Nicolas Gill was pleased with the Canadian performances.
"Our two best hopes for gold were with Marie-Helène and Catherine. Marie-Helène was the only one to really challenge the Cuban while Catherine had the ability to beat the Brazilian. They both came close. Overall the results were very encouraging.''
