NATIONAL team Judo coach Francis Linosi has said the results produced by the Zambian team at the just-ended Zone VI Judo Championship in Zimbabwe was an indication that the team was ready for the Commonwealth Games.
In an interview yesterday, Linosi whose team managed ten gold medals said the event was a final trial for national team selection. "We had promised the players that only medal winners would be considered for selection to the national team but as it happened, we managed ten gold medals," Linosi said.
He said the performance by the judokas was overwhelming as Zambia did not have a full team and yet managed a second place finish.
"We won five gold medals out of the eight categories in the senior men's event. This shows how dominant the players were." Linosi said funds allowing, he would love to have a full team at the Commonwealth Games scheduled for Northern Ireland in June.
"As it stands, we plan on sending five fighters to the games including some juniors. Two of our juniors won gold in Zimbabwe but we are yet to come up with the team that will go for the games," Linosi said.
The Zambian team won, 13 silver and one bronze, ten gold medals at the Zone VI games held over the Easter weekend. In the Kuresh category, the Zambian team won three gold medals through captain Ansell Banda in the 60kg contest, Malama Mpilikisha of Zambia Air Force (ZAF) in 66kg category and Boas Muyonga of Zambia National Service (ZNS) in the 81kg category.
Luckson Mulemwa, a 66kg senior fighter from ZNS, Gabriel Kunda from Zambia Police headquarters (73kg), Thomson Tembo from Green Buffaloes (90kg) and Aaron Zulu of ZNS (100kg) all reaped silver in their respective weights.
In the women's Judo category, vice-captain Carol Mweengwa of ZNS (57kg), inspired her colleagues, Esther Sandu, also from ZNS, in the 52kg and Malambo Malambo of ZAF (52kg) to finish as silver medalists.
Other judokas who participated at the championship are Matthews Punza (56kg) from police headquarters, Havey Siwale from Lilayi who featured in the youth category in which she won a gold medal and Amos Sikazwe in the 60kg category.
