Judo: Two standouts from Cohen's Judo Club in Mundelein -- Aaron Cohen and Ronda Rousey -- claimed championships at the 2006 U.S. Judo Senior National Championships this past weekend in Houston. Both are now three-time national champs.
Cohen picked up his title in the 81 kg weight category. He also took the "Best Technique" award. He will represent the U.S. next month at the Pan-American Judo Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Rousey, who moved to the Chicago area from Venice, Calif., captured her title in 63 kg. Like Cohen, she will compete in the Pan-American Championships.
Rousey, the current Junior World Champion and 2004 U.S. Olympian, has been very successful of late. Earlier this spring, she won gold medals in two European events: British Open A Tournament and Belgium Ladies Open.
The two stars receive training from two former Olympians in Irwin Cohen (1972) and Steve Cohen ('88). Both were coaches of the U.S. Olympic team in 2000.
In the other action in Houston, Richard Cohen just missed earning a bronze in 73 kg division, while Danny Satinsky was a seventh-place finisher.
Meanwhile, Nikki Schultheis of the Gurnee Judo Club, placed fifth in her division (52 kg) at the national championships.
