Fukumi to represent Japan in World Judo Championship
FUKUOKA: East Asian gold medallist Tomoko Fukumi will represent Japan for the first time in the absence of seven-time champion Ryoko Tani at the world championships, it was announced on Sunday. The 23-year-old Fukumi, the winner at the German international, was named after beating arch-rival Emi Yamagishi in the women’s 48-kilogramme final to win the national championships for her second time on Sunday.

“Of course, I felt pressure, but if you fight in the world, you feel heavier pressure. I just fought against it. I have a lot more to work on in order to fight in the world,” said Fukumi. Tani, who failed to win a third straight Olympic gold and settled for bronze in the Beijing Games last year, is expected to have a second baby in October and skipped the qualifying competition here. For five of the six women it will be their first time in the world championships, to be played in the Netherlands in August. Two-time world silver medallist Sae Nakazawa will be competing in the 78kg for a third time.

Beijing Olympic bronze medallist Misato Nakamura was chosen for the 52kg despite her defeat to Yuka Nishida in the final on Sunday. afp
