Stephen wins judo gold medals

By Gavin Grosvenor
MID Wales Judo star Stephen Abberley walked off with two gold medals at the Welsh Judo Championships in Cardiff last weekend.
Stephen capped his golden double by being crowned 'Player of the Year' for a second consecutive year.

The 21-year-old Llandrindod Wells-raised martial arts expert is currently undertaking a sports studies course at the University of Glamorgan in Pontypridd.

Stephen took gold in the closed under 81 kilos before going on to take gold in the Open Judo competition in the Welsh Judo Association Championships at the Cardiff Welsh Institute of Sport. Stephen followed up his national success by lifting the sports personality of the year in the Brecknockshire and Radnorshire Sports Awards.

Stephen fended off rival nominations for cyclist Jessica Allen and golfer Hannah Jenkins to prevail.

Sports council spokesperson Helen Davies said: "Stephen is the deserved winner of the prestigious award following his consistent success in his discipline.

"He is the current No1 judo player in Wales and has underlined this by winning the North Wales Championship and the Welsh Judio Championships in Cardiff."

Stephen has stayed loyal to his roots and remains a member of the Irfon Judo Club in Builth Wells.
