Olympic boost for judo ace McFetrich

BOGLESTONE Judo Club’s John McFetrich took silver in the under-90kg junior competition when the Scottish judo team travelled to the Commonwealth Championships in Mauritius.
The Port Glasgow teenager’s hopes of winning an Olympic medal received a boost recently as the teenager added another Commonwealth medal to his collection.
Former Port High School pupil McFetrich has his sights set firmly on climbing to the top of the podium at London’s 2012 Olympic games and the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow — and will be training hard to get there.
He said: “I won the gold at the Scottish Championships in December and this was part of the team selection for the Scottish squad for Mauritius.
“I am always focusing on the future and the Olympics and Commonwealth Games in London and Glasgow are on the horizon.”
In preparing to meet his ultimate goals, the 17-year-old knows he will have to concentrate on his judo if he is to take a medal in either, or both, of these major championships.
He added: “I do judo training four times a week, but I also have to do strength work, cardiovascular and weights three times a week, so it does take up a lot of my time.”
John now trains with the Elite Squad at the Palace of Arts in Glasgow and travels and trains extensively across Scotland.
Boglestone Judo Club practise on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7-9pm. For further details, contact senior club coach Robert Sharp on 791295.
