By Rami Hipsh, Haaretz Correspondent and Staff Israeli judoka and former Olympic medalist Arik Zeevi yesterday defeated his opponent by ippon at the judo world championship in Prague, winning a gold medal - and promising him a place at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. In a grueling 4:43 minute encounter, Zeevi displayed impressive technical ability and held down his opponent from Belarus to a low score.
Zeevi excelled in his previous five encounters and already had promised himself a gold medal before his final victory. He achieved his goal for the tournament - to maintain his position as a leading judoka in his class, up to 100 kilograms. "I congratulate him for this great achievement that shows he [Zeevi] is back to his former self," Adi Koaz, the chairman of the Israeli judo association said. "But despite winning, he isn't at the peak of his abilities and was accompanied by a doctor to the tournament. Now that his confidence is back and his place in the Olympics secure, he can quietly prepare for the 2008 olympics in Beijing." Israeli judoka Gal Yekutiel yesterday reached fifth place at the same tournament, and will need to win more encounters to qualify for Beijing 2008.
