World judo champ Riner misses bronze as Muneta takes gold
18 hours ago HAMBURG, Germany (AFP) — Giant teenage world champion Teddy Riner lost out in the battle for the bronze medal when he was beaten by Dutch judoka Grim Vuijsters in the over-100kgs category at the Super World Cup in Hamburg on Sunday.
The 18-year-old, who won gold in Rio de Janeiro's World Championships last year in the same category, had already lost out to eventual winner Yasuyuki Muneta, a double world champion, in the Pool A final with a yuko.
Riner went on to beat Hungary's Barna Bor and Germany's Andreas Toelzer in the repechage, but lost to Vuijsters on the judges decision after neither judoka could force a score.
After beating Russia's Maxim Bryanov in the semi-final, Japan's Muneta won the final against Abdullo Tangriev from Uzbekistan with an ippon.
