THE PRE-INDEPENDENCE JUDO COMPETITION in honour of Darwin Bellamy proved to be one of great excitement at the Shotokan Karate Club yesterday.
Each year, tournaments are named after various members of the Barbados Judo Association who have contributed to the development of the sport. This year Bellamy, who was an instructor for children between the ages of seven and 16 for five years was honoured.
"I feel very good to be honoured because I really put in a lot," Bellamy told SUNSPORTS yesterday. He added that he used to practise judo and self-defence at the Hilton Hotel every Saturday.
The tournament began with children of the lightest weight class (23kg). Despite their age and size, the youngsters were very keen and showed great strength in their fights.
One of the exciting encounters featured J'Barri Inniss and Reanna John of the Pinelands Judo Club. By the end of the three-minute round, Inniss had overpowered John to take the match.
In a match with children of a heavier weight class (43kg), both Jalisa Phillips and Kristina Clarke of Pinelands put up a very strong fight as they both had opportunities to place their opponents on the mat. Although both competitors proved to be keen strategists, Phillips won the match-up.
Mark Springer and Dario Taylor of the Marine Gardens Judo Club competed in the heaviest weight class in the tournament (+100kg).
Their five-minute contest began with both players engaged in a close tussle for the goal medal, but in the end, Springer proved to be the better one with superior strength and technique.
Overall, Marine took home six golds, five silvers and one bronze medal, while Pinelands achieved four golds, three silvers and three bronze medals.
Levar Arthur was the only representative from the Barbados Judo Institute; and he also took home a gold medal.
