Judo club comes home with four medals
Port Lincoln Judo
THE Port Lincoln Judo Club entered eight members into the State titles on Sunday, October 21 and took home three gold and one bronze.
The competition was very well attended from fighters all over South Australia.
Jordan Haynes fought well in the under 10s, under 44s, beating Adelaide and fighter with an Ippon throw (Ippon = maximum points) to win the gold medal.
Tamika Haynes fought two girls from the South Australian State team and just missed out on a medal, while Emily Hookings fought well to take out the gold for the young women under 52 division.
Luke Kake had his second competition taking out the gold for the under 13, under 81kg, division.
Leigh O’Reily fought well but missed out on medal due to injury and James O’Grady lost his first fight against a State team member from Adelaide.
However, he won the second round by armlocking his opponent, forcing him to submit, and won the bronze for under 81kg senior men.
Luke McDonald lost his first fight to an Adelaide fighter, which put him out of the gold/silver match. He then fought for bronze but was strangled and was forced to submit.
David MacDonald lost the bronze medal fight, also after beating the fighter in previous tournaments.
Overall it was excellent effort for the Port Lincoln Judo Club. The team is now in training for the Sydney National titles, which will be held over the 2008 June long weekend.
Judo is an Olympic sport and a great self defence. Training times are: Monday 6-7pm (juniors); Monday 7-8.30pm (seniors); Thursday 7.30-8.30pm (seniors), all at the Port Lincoln Gymnastics Club facility, Ravendale. First session is free of charge. More details: Luke MacDonald, 0427 506 809.
