A REIGNING national champion, Ivo Dos Santos was one of many stars to compete at Judo Bendigo’s annual tournament on Sunday at the Schweppes Centre.
A leading contender for the Beijing Olympics, Dos Santos won the under 69 kg division final against Bendigo’s own Aaron Macumber.
A star with the Melbourne-based Western Judo, Dos Santos was 11th at the senior world championships, the highest place achieved by an Australian player.
He is also an Oceania champion.
One of Judo Bendigo’s best, Macumber won the under 65 kg class.
The day’s judo action in Bendigo drew 112 players to compete in a wide variety of weight divisions.
The Judo Bendigo squad, where Neville Sharpe and Ben Donegan are instructors, was in top form.
Competing in the under 81 kg division, Ben Donegan won the final against Ben Lee, with Judo Bendigo’s Travis Cail in third place.
Winners from the Bendigo Judo Academy were Caine Stuart, Bryan Jollyand Allen Jolly, Judo Bendigo’s titleholders were Ben Sloane, Shaun Hurley, Louis Mott, Jack Friswell, Colquhoun Williams, and Flynn Williams, Chris Pollard, of Prime Judo, was runner-up in the over 102 kg class.
