‘Faiz fused poetry with revolution’

‘Faiz fused poetry with revolution’

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: Faiz Ahmad Faiz was voice of the deprived segment of society, said Prof Khawaja Masud speaking at the ‘Faiz Ahmad Faiz National Literary Conference’ on Tuesday.
He presided over the conference arranged by the Pakistan Academy of Letters (PAL). Faiz fused poetry with revolution, Masud said, adding that, when beauty conveys a message, ethics merge with aesthetics and art becomes inseparable from politics, it becomes the poetry of Faiz.
Faiz knew how to create images that were the essential beauty of time, because they were very ‘cri de coeur’ of oppressed humanity, said Masud.
“His art is a weapon of the revolutionary struggle of the masses, even though, paradoxically, he is the most lyrical of the Urdu poets,” he said, adding that his lyricism was as much the story of his life, as the chronicle of our tormented times.
He said Faiz had forged in the smithy of his soul the consciousness and conscience of his perplexed people groping in the dark in search for light, with the creativity of his mind he touched visionary themes.
Munno Bhai said that Faiz was a very loving person and he even did not speak against his opponents. He was a charming poet with a melodious voice, he added.
“He always composed poetry which was in harmony with his times and conditions. His progressive thinking was also very popular,” he added.
Rahat Saeed, another speaker, said Faiz was still alive because of his thoughts and poetry. Those who opposed his ideas are now acknowledging him as a great poet, said Saeed.
PAL Chairman Iftikhar Arif said those who were hostile to Faiz were of the view that his popularity was due his affiliation with some countries, organisations, institutions and parties. He said now there was neither the Soviet Union and progressive writers’ movement nor the communist and socialist parties but Faiz was still being acknowledged as a great poet.
“Faiz is among those poets who have been translated well in the foreign languages both in terms of quantity and quality,” he added. Prof Ahmed Javed said Faiz was a champion of peace, democracy and justice and his poetry was a true reflection of the incidents and conditions of his time.
Dr Najiba Arif said Faiz’s poetry offered such similes that created vibrations in the latent chords of heart, such images that lift the thoughts to great heights, such arguments that endow the aims with a certain glory and those interpretations of dreams that give directions to life.
Dr Shaheen Mufti and Harris Khaleeq also addressed the conference.
