Jim O'Sullivan might not be as spry as he once was, but his knowledge and passion for judo still burns deep.Yesterday, at the SIAST gymnasium, the 75-year-old O'Sullivan watched a field of competitors flip, wheel and throw their way through the first Jim O'Sullivan Cup.
"That's a haraigoshi ... that's an ogoshi ... that's a koshiguruma," explained O'Sullivan, as he pointed out the various judo maneuvers and throws the participants were performing.
For the longest time O'Sullivan's eyes didn't leave the fighting surface. However, when two particular competitors walked by, O'Sullivan turned and said: "See those two boys? They're very good. They'll go a long way."
The two boys were brothers - Dilyaver and Emin Sheykhislyamov. And if yesterday's tournament was any indication, O'Sullivan is right: They will, indeed, go a long way in the sport of judo.
Competing in the senior males' under-90 kilogram division, the Sheykhislyamov brothers put on an impressive display, with Dilyaver winning the gold medal and Emin capturing the bronze.
"I was feeling good," said the 18-year-old Dilyaver. "My performance was OK. I still have things to work on, but it was OK."
The younger brother, Emin, wasn't so content. When asked if he was pleased with his performance, Emin's answer was simple: No."It's not that I lost two fights," said the 17-year-old. "It's how I lost them. I could have done better."Regardless of whether they were enthused with their recent efforts, Fedor Lazarenko, president of the Prince Albert Judo Club, knows the future is bright for the Sheykhislyamov brothers.
"They are very focused on what they want to do, where they want to go," said Lazarenko. "They are very dedicated ... and want to become champions."After all was said and done, Dilyaver and Emin joined the rest of the medal winners on the mat for a picture with O'Sullivan. The competitors wore their medals and O'Sullivan wore a smile, from ear-to-ear ahawboldt@paherald.sk.ca .
