Rumi: The Poetry of WorshipMYSTIC SUFI POET RUMI hasn't been around for centuries to enjoy accolades, particularly around the time of the anniversary of his birth as Mevlana Jalal-ad-Din Rumi, but that isn't stopping the Freer from splashing out in honor of the big eight-oh-oh.
The poet is still a best-seller internationally, and the order of worshippers he founded, the whirling dervishes, who spin in ecstatic and divine contemplation, still have torque. It's no wonder that no less a body than the United Nations has declared 2007 "International Rumi Year." Now, the Freer is honoring Rumi party-style, with a day of music, food, art and poetry.
At 11:15 a.m., poet Naomi Shihab Nye conducts a unique, poetry-centric gallery tour; she also closes the day with a 7:30 p.m. reading of Rumi's work and also her National Book Award finalist collection, "19 Varieties of Gazelle."
In between, there will be a performance by Iranian-born vocalist Lida Saeedian, singer Humayun Bahadoran and a small ensemble; readings from young local poets; and an appearance by Baltimore's Persian National Music Ensemble.
Perhaps the most extraordinary event is "Reciting Rumi in the Galleries," for children ages six to 14 and their accompanying adults. The kids will study the connection betwen poetry and painting, then write their own poems on illuminated pages.
