Saturday, September 01, 2007 THE first wave of gold medals to Fiji touched down at Nadi yesterday morning on Air Pacific FJ252.
The team of 24 judokas, five shooters and seven weightlifters, touched down at the Nadi International Airport at 1.20am for immediate travel to Suva.
This batch of medal winning athletes impressively set the pace for the Fiji contingent in Samoa and boasted amongst them 10 gold, 11 silvers and 17 bronze medals.
They have made a major contribution to Team Fiji's current medal haul.
Fiji Judo section manager Josateki Lemaki said the judo fraternity was pleased with the performance.
"We're really happy with our achievement although we did not meet our target. The results should argue well for the sport in the country."
After farewelling the shooting, judo and weightlifting teams, Team Fiji welcomed the boxing team into the games village.
Section manager Nemani Vuniwaqa said the boys were settling in well ahead of Monday's competition.
The team of 11 boxers will compete in the 48kg, 51kg, 54kg, 57kg, 60kg, 64kg, 69kg, 75kg, 81kg, 91 and 91+ kg categories.
The boys are sticking to their dietary plans and will engage in some light training as preparation.
