Judo Ontario will host the 19th Annual Shin Bu Kan Judo Tournament at Humber College's Athletic Centre next month.
This year's event is expected to draw in more than 400 competitors from junior divisions for kids aged 5 up to the masters category for people 30 and up. The tournament has been the brainchild of Sensei Goki Uemura, one of Canada's foremost elite black belts and instructors - one of only two eighth Dans in Ontario who has been involved in the sport for more than 60 years.
According to Judo Ontario's Greg Butrey, the martial art combines throws and hold downs and can be done by girls and boys of all ages.
"Not only does Judo have the benefit of physical fitness, but there's also the self-confidence and friendships made through sport," he said.
Ontario has about 2,800 registered judoka and is growing, especially at the grassroots level, Butrey added.
The Shin Bu Kan Judo Tournament will take place on Saturday, Oct. 13, in Humber's Gordon Wragg Building, 205 Humber College Blvd. The event kicks off with opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. Spectators are welcome, free of charge. Refreshments, T-shirts and judo supplies will be available for purchase on-site.
The tournament is open to all members of provincial associations, Judo Canada and IJF recognized associations of other countries. Junior registration is $30, juvenile/senior/masters cost $35, and family registration is $70.
