Medal haul for Tumby judo club

Medal haul for Tumby judo club

NINE players from the Tumby Bay Judo Club attended the South Australian International Open at the Morialta High School gymnasium on Sunday, August 12.
First on the mat was Tumby Bay judo coach Tom Arancelovic fighting in senior men's under 66kg. He lost to S. Brown, unfortunately hyper-extending his right elbow during the bout and ending his tournament.
Next on the mat was man-mountain Jake Andrewatha, having just returned from Macau, China, coming third in the Pacific Rim Young Men's over 100kg divisions. Jake is also on standby for the Beijing Olympics, being third in line to represent Australia in the over 100kg division.
Jake competed in three divisions for this competition: young men's and senior men over 100kg and the men's open.
He won all four fights in the senior men's to win a gold medal, also a gold medal for young and a silver medal for the open competition, losing only to a player from Western Australia; not bad for a 17-year-old lad from Tumby Bay.
Thomas Hurst, competing in his third competition, was next up. He fights in the under 13 under 42kg division, which is full of talented players. He came sixth after five determined efforts.
Next was Reece Gerrie, fighting in the under 10, under 38kg, he beat two opponents to bring home a gold medal.
With only one opponent, Nathan Heath, fighting in the under 34kg, under 13 years, won gold also.
Dane Fredrickson won his first two fights in a determined manner and then came up against Kane Beeching from the Burnside Judo Club and lost after a mighty effort. Dane went on to win his next two bouts to bring home a silver medal in the under 13, under 42kg division, a great effort.
Wade Gerrie, fighting in the under 38kg, under 13, lost his first fight to Joshua Crawley of the Tiger Judo Club, then won his next bout to receive a silver medal also.
Hannah Fredrickson only had the one fight. Although she fought with determination and strength, she lost to Port Augusta's Hannah Miklevic in the under 16, under 44kg division.
Jack Gerrie was next on the mat in the under 60kg, under 16, fighting Shaun Horgan from Port Augusta and Tao Milkovich from Burnside. He won both bouts for a gold medal.
With only 11 members training at present this is an outstanding achievement for not only the players but also the coaching efforts of Tom and Sandy Arancelovic.
If anyone is interested in joining the club, come down to the scout hall at the Tumby Bay oval on Mondays from 6.30pm or ring Michelle Gerrie on 0427 833 181.
