Judo: Art Of Self-Defence
By Rohan Alvares, Sports Reporter
A deceptively serene atmosphere surrounded the Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club last weekend, until that is, you stepped into the main hall.
The 11th GCC Judo Championship, organised by the UAE Wrestling and Judo Federation and held under the patronage of Shaikh Hazza Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Adviser to the National Security Council, was the reason for the vibrant buzz inside and it seemed to infect everyone from the fighters to the coaches, officials as well as the ever energetic spectators.
And as the tournament progressed from the qualifying rounds to the tussle for medals, the tempo just got better and better with a wide range of classic techniques combining speed and strength being exhibited by the Gulf region’s finest young judokas.
The star for the host nation was undoubtedly Ali Al Drai who followed up his win in the under-60kg junior division with similar success in the senior division in the same weight category to complete a memorable gold double.
It did not come easy though as the 19-year-old was unable to break through the resistance of Saudi Arabia’s Eisa Hassan Majrashi in their first encounter, enforcing a replay, in which the former eventually came out on top.
To complement Al Drai’s achievement, three silver and a bronze in the under-66, under-73, under-100 and under-81 weight categories, respectively, in the senior division made it a satisfying tournament for the UAE.
Naser Al Tameemi, assistant general secretary of the UAE Wrestling and Judo Federation expressed his delight at the impact the Emirati fighters had made on the two-day championship and said: "We got good results in the juniors with three gold and a silver, and in only six years they have managed to do so well, so this gives us hope.
"It is important for judo in the UAE and our plan is to train these youngsters so that we can possibly have one, two or more fighters competing at the international level and the Olympics in the near future."
Kuwait were credited with four gold medals each in the junior and senior divisions but a couple of incidents took away some of the gloss.
First, Mosad Al Hajery went ballistic at the referee’s decision to declare his opponent Abdul Rahman Al Hazmy of Saudi Arabia the winner of their under-66kg match and his dissent left the judges with no option but to bar him from the rest of the competition.
Team Leader of the Kuwait squad Fahad Al Mutari said: "The decision to expel him was the right one as was the decision by the referee. We don’t accept this kind of behaviour and gave [Mosad] a hard talk. He regretted his actions later and said he was just out of control at that time."
The second blow arrived in the form of an injury to under-81kg fighter Mohammad Ebrahim Esmail which brought an end to his competition.
