U S JudoJUDO: Sayaka Matsumoto Wins Bronze at Pacific Rim Championships

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Sayaka Matsumoto (El Cerrito, Calif. / NYAC / East Bay Judo Institute) won her second consecutive bronze medal in the 48kg division at the biannual Pacific Rim Championships on Saturday in Macau.
Matsumoto drew a Korean opponent in the first round and was up by a koka (smallest points) until the three minute mark when she was countered for ippon (instant win).
After the loss, Matsumoto dropped down to the repechage where she fought players from Macau and Japan, throwing the Macau player with an o soto gari (outer leg throw) for ippon and pinning the Japanese player with sankaku (triangle hold) for ippon.
In the bronze medal match Matsumoto pinned a player from Hong Kong for ippon.
Players from Chinese Taipei, China and Korea took the gold, silver and other bronze medals in the division, respectively.
Matsumoto was the only American competing in the event.
