
Judo championship starts today

Abu Dhabi: Over 200 athletes from the Gulf region will be in the fray as the two-day 11th Gulf Judo championship starts today at the UAE Wrestling and Judo Federation (UAEWJF) arena.
Organised by the UAE Wrestling and Judo Federation (UAEWJF), the championship is being held under the patronage of Shaikh Hazza Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Speaking ahead of the event, Mohammad Bin Thaloob, UAEWJF President, said: "Competitions will be held in three different categories.
Some of the most talented and promising youngsters and senior fighters will be taking part in the regional championship."
"Competitions will be held in the Under-15 and Under-20 junior levels with an open men's category. Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and hosts UAE will be represented by strong teams and some interesting fare is on the cards," he said.
'The Juniors (Under-15) events will be held today while tomorrow the Youth (Under-20) and Men's competitions will be worked off.
Action begins at 10.00 am on both day's with a 5.00 pm opening ceremony expected to feature an exciting one-hour session, according to Bin Thaloob.
Mohammad Bin Thaloob is the chairman of the Organising Committee with Nasser Badoor, Mohammad Jassem and Nasser Al Tameemi as members, Thaloob said.
Ali Al Drai, Mahfood Al Qubaisi, Khalifa Al Qubaisi, Hameed Al Drai, Sayed Al Qubaisi, Mubarak Al Mansouri and Sayed Al Mazroui are some of the UAE's top judo stars and are expected to excel in their respective categories.
Kuwait and Saudi Arabia emerged are the defending champions the junior and senior categories respectively.
The opening ceremony is being held in association with the Abu Dhabi Educational Zone with the Military Band providing the music.
Escan, Hotel Inter-Continental, Abu Dhabi and SFAM Noris Sports are the sponsors of the championship.
