Abu Dhabi: Ali Al Drai completed a memorable double for the hosts in the two-day 11th Gulf Judo Championship which concluded in the capital on Thursday.
The 19-year-old UAE star, who won the under-60kg gold in the under-19 category repeated his gold-winning effort in the same category in the Open section.
In the final, Al Drai proved his class against Saudi Arabia's Eisa Hassan Majrashi to give cheer to the home fans after Kuwait had dominated the championship.
Al Drai said he was delighted with his double triumph and hailed the support of the UAE Judo Federation as well as his coach Sergei Savekliev.
"Before the start of this championship I was keen to better my display in the 2005 event where I won one gold. We all put in a lot of hard work and I am happy to top in both the youth and senior sections," said Al Drai, who now turns his eye to next month's Arab Championship in Damascus and the Asian event in India.
Very talented fighters
Kuwait extended their dominance by winning the senior category also. Kuwait won four golds and a bronze and were followed by the Saudis with three golds, three silvers and a bronze.
Mohammad Bin Thaloob, President of the UAEWJF, said the two-day championship held under the patronage of Shaikh Hazza Bin Zayed Al Nahyan was a big success.
"The level of the competition was high and the teams in the region were represented by some very talented fighters," he said.
"Over 200 competitors took part in the championship and the next edition will be held in Qatar."
