Nahoakuwoo Salera was given the Best Technique Award, Melinda Chow the Sportsmanship Award and Hawaii athletes earned 27 medals during the first day of the USA Judo National Junior Olympic Championships at San Jose, Calif.
Salera, competing in the 42-kilogram Intermediate 2 division, won all five of his matches by ippon (instant win). His dynamic throwing ability is what earned him his award, according to the judges.
Chow went 5-0 by ippon as well in the 48kg Intermediate 2 division. Judges said she dominated each match with a quiet confidence.
After the first day, Hawaii had 13 gold medals, seven silver and seven bronze for 93 points and second place in the team standings. California dominated the 18-state competition with 72 medals overall, for 204 points.
Hawaii dominated the Boys Intermediate 2 38kg division, earning all three medals. The gold went to Kekoa Morris, the silver to Royce Mori and the bronze to Ryan Oda.
Also winning gold from Hawaii were: Siena Ho, Bantam 3 23kg; Kaylin Castro, Bantam 3 27 kg; Teniya Alo, Bantam 2 25kg; and Teshya Alo, Intermediate 1 26kg;
Male gold medalists from Hawaii were: Cameron Kato, Bantam 3 23kg; Tyler Allen, Bantam 3 27kg; Ka'ua Nishigaya, Bantam 1 19kg; Jacob Palimoa, Intermediate 2 34kg; Kekoa Morris, Intermediate 2 38kg; Dane Pestano, Intermediate 2 53kg; and Bryson Castro, Intermediate 1 34kg.
