The Abbotsford Judo club celebrated a huge team performance at the junior national championships in Lethbridge, Alberta recently.
The junior nationals is for athletes who compete as juveniles (age 14-15) and juniors (16-19), and a strong showing there is a great stepping stone to one day being a member of the Canadian national team.
Head coach Tokue Suda brought seven of his students from the Abbotsford club to the junior nationals, and they won a gold and three bronze medals.
“Abbotsford led the charge for B.C. clubs,” said club coach Chris Astoria.
Suda’s daughter, student and fellow club coach Kimi Suda is a national team member who helped at the memorable tournament.
“I was really impressed by he heart the kids put into the matches,” she said. “I was really proud of them.”
Kimi said the most entertaining match of the tournament was that of Rebecca Pretious, as the juvenile girl won gold.
“It was a crazy battle in the final. I could have gone either way. They were both so tired... and then Rebecca just threw her opponent so big, and the crowd went wild,” recalled Kimi. It was that decisive move, which won her gold.
“It was a great moment for her, and you could see it in her eyes.”
Another juvenile fighter, Aaron McFadden, won a bronze medal, as did juniors Layton Keely and Allan LaPlante.
Other competitors from Abbotsford who fought on the national stage were juvenile Erica Sprott, and juniors Ray Goerke and Craig Rees.
The club members will now be looking forward to opportunities for international competition in the future said Astoria.
