Fort McMurray Today — Former Fort McMurray judoka Laurie Wiltshire has repeated as the national 52 kilogram senior women’s champion.
The one-time member of the local Ni-Ten Judo Club completed the feat recently in Winnipeg.
Now a multiple provincial and national champion, Wiltshire defeated Clara Mongeon of Quebec, Nicole Tsukishima of Alberta and Eve Renaud-Roy of Quebec in the gold medal fight to capture the senior women’s top prize for a second straight year.
While obviously pleased with her performance, she can’t help but take this latest championship in stride.
“Nothing compares to the first time,” she said, referring to 2005. “With this one I was kind of expected to win.”
A graduate of Westwood High School, she spent most of the past four years training in Montreal with the national team before moving back to Alberta, where she now attends Mount Royal College.
She is also a veteran of Canadian teams which have competed in prestigious international and Pan-Am tournaments -- although due to schooling responsibilities, this year’s senior nationals were her first big competition of 2006.
“This year I took a bit of a break. Basically I trained myself. But going in (to nationals) I was the most experienced and that helped a lot.”
