(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – The Sunshine State Games was held over the weekend at the Miami Dade County Fairgrounds and Expo Center in Miami, Fla. with 200 athletes from throughout Florida competing, including many of the top-ranked junior and senior athletes in the United States.
Angelica Delgado (North Lauderdale, Fla./North Miami USA Judo National Training Site), a silver medalist at the 2006 Pan Am Juvenile Championships at 57kg, earned the Outstanding Senior Female award for winning both the Juvenile C and the Senior 63kg divisions.
Delgado’s North Miami Teammate Bobby Lee (Lauderhill, Fla.) earned his second consecutive Outstanding Senior Male honor for winning the 81kg division. A Senior Nationals bronze medalist at 73kg, Lee fought in a field that included Phillip Spano (Tampa, Fla./El Mambi Judo), a bronze medalist at last year’s Junior British Open at 73kg, and 33-year-old Marius Pavydis (Orlando, Fla.), originally of Lithuania. Lee won each of his five matches by ippon (instant win), including two victories over Spano, first by throwing him for ippon (instant win) with one minute remaining in the match and later foot sweeping him for waza-ari (half-point) and then throwing him for ippon with an osoto gari (major outer reaping).
Ronnie Talledo (North Lauderdale, Fla./North Miami USA Judo National Training Site) and Juan Roman, a member of the Puerto Rican National Team, had a rematch of this year’s New York Open final. Although both athletes traditionally compete in the 60kg division, they each fought up to 66kg with Talledo prevailing again. The bronze medal match also proved to be exciting as Athens Paralympian Emmanuel Brannon (Seminale, Fla./St. Pete Judo) threw Miguel Ballesteros (North Lauderdale, Fla./North Miami USA Judo National Training Site), last year’s Pan Am Infantil Champion at 58kg, with a kata guruma (shoulder wheel throw) for ippon.
Three other Pan Am Infantil medalists also competed this weekend. Carly Patton (Zephyrhills, Fla./El Mambi Judo), the 2005 Pan Am Infantil Outstanding Female Competitor, won the 53kg 11-12-year-old division. Patton is a long-time competitor at the Sunshine State Games, having taken the Outstanding Female Competitor in 2004. Pan Am Infantil bronze medalists Persila Bencomo (Miami, Fla./Pinecrest) and Carina Caminero (Tampa, Fla./El Mambi Judo) also competed this weekend with Bencomo winning the 11-12-year-old +53kg division and Caminero taking the 13-14year-old 48kg title.
Leading the Sunshine State Games judo competition this year was Fred Hand (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon County Judo Club) who has been the sport director for 14 years. Hand brings a wealth of judo knowledge to the sport as a former athlete, coach and administrator. Hand’s son, Ato, competed in Florida’s Sunshine State Games in the early 90s and went on to fight at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
Overseeing the operation of the Sunshine State Games as a whole is Stephen Rodriguez (Tallahassee, Fla.), son of USA Judo CEO Jose H. Rodriguez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) As Director of Amateur Sports for the Florida Sports Foundation, this year is the seventh Sunshine State Games Stephen has been directly involved with the presenting organization.
“We are proud of the relationship USA Judo has established with the State Games of America movement. Having been the Sunshine State Games Director prior to Stephen, I know the importance of judo in these Games,” Jose H. Rodriguez said. “USA Judo’s goal is to have 100% of all State Games offering judo in their program by 2008. I am proud to see that Florida is leading the way in judo participation in the State Games movement.”
