Country's Largest Judo Tournament Coming to South Florida

One of the biggest youth sports events in the country is coming to South Florida this summer. The 37th United States Judo Association Junior Nationals is scheduled for July 15-16, 2006, at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.

The tournament host is Tomodachi Judo Club of Boca Raton and Boynton Beach, Fla.

Judo is one of the most popular participant sports worldwide, second only to soccer. About 800 competitors are expected from around the United States and abroad for this big South Florida tournament.

Throughout the year, Tomodachi meets Monday and Thursday in Boynton Beach and Wednesday and Saturday in Boca Raton. A new offshoot is starting up in Vero Beach. Tomodachi Judo Club has a lkarge teaching staff of highly regarded senseis, many with international judo credentials.

Any coverage you could provide would be appreciated, both during the tournament and in advance of the event. Members of the media are encouraged to attend a Tomodachi class. You are welcome to walk around, talk to the judo players, take pictures and even get on the mat yourself.

The club's newest black belt is Boynton Beach City Commissioner Bob Ensler, a 75-year-old politician who has used his position to steer youngsters into judo.

Ensler, a commissioner since 2003, won a gold medal in the Pan American Masters judo championships last year in Montreal. He also compete in the Pan Am Masters in Denver, and Masters world championships in Paris in 2006.

Judo is the ultimate individual sport. You learn at your own rate. Advanced students help out, and they learn through interaction and teaching. Judo players have a path to develop pride, self-esteem and assurance.
