HA NOI — Judoist Dang Le Bich Van of Viet Nam 1 took home the first gold medal on the opening day of the 3rd International Judo Tournament last weekend.
Van, who competed in the women’s under-45kg category, beat Mayouly Phanouvong from Laos by ippon point in the final, held at the Trinh Hoai Duc Sports Hall. Her Lao opponent, who knocked out Thu Trang from Ha Noi and Ngoc Nha of HCM City in the quarter and semi-finals on Saturday morning, dominated in the opening minutes of the final. However, the experienced Van remained focused, and she overpowered Mayouly Phanouvong to take the gold.
Chinese Yang Shuang from the Tiatan team defeated Guangxi’s Gong Xia in the women’s under-48kg final.
In the men’s under-55kg category, Bui Dinh Tien of Viet Nam 2 – who was the only winner of a gold medal at the previous tournament – cruised for gold when he met Pham Ngoc Minh Luan from HCM City in the final.
Southeast Asian Games gold medallist in the men’s under-60kg class, Tran Van Doat, also pegged a gold medal with his defeat over Nguyen Tuan Hoc from Ha Noi in the final. Doat, who won the first gold medal for Viet Nam at the International Judo Tournament in Macao last year, is seen as the country’s best hope at the Asian Games in Qatar this December.
Strong contenders from South Korea displayed great skill, and managed to bag two gold medals on the opening day. Jang Sung-ho won gold in the men’s under-100kg, while Choi Sun-ho took the men’s under-90kg division.
Japan also won a gold medal in the first day of competition, with Yoko Nesaki coming out on top in the men’s under-70kg category.
Chinese Chen Xia added another gold medal for his Guangxi team in the under-63kg event.
The tournament, which is scheduled to wrap up today, attracted 107 athletes from four Vietnamese teams as well as teams from Laos, South Korea, Japan, China and Thailand, competing for 16 medal sets in men’s and women’s weight categories.
In the event in Ha Noi last year, which drew 64 players from Thailand, Japan, Malaysia and Laos, Viet Nam finished third overall with one gold, six silver and five bronze medals. Thailand placed first overall with 12 gold, two silver and two bronze medals, while Japan was second with three gold and three silvers. — VNS
