A PARTY of four senior and five junior judo players from the Isle of Man Judo Club travelled with coaches Rob and David Crowe to Sutton on Merseyside to compete at the British Judo Association's North West Grading competition on Sunday.
The seniors fared well with Ed Watling competing at sixth kyu, winning both his contests to clinch promotion to fourth kyu.Rob Sheen also achieved success at first kyu. Rob required only one win to gain the 10 points required to achieve his first dan. In a tense finale to the afternoon Rob claimed the black belt in his last fight.Helen Sheen, who has spent the past month training on Merseyside, continued her recent good form by winning five out of six of her bouts. This secured her the title of second dan. With this she became the youngest female of that rank the Island has produced.Adam Horne, who competed at first kyu, was unlucky to come up against strong opposition out of the pool of 30 to remain at that rank. The juniors also performed well with Georgia Bloom, competing at ninth mon, winning both contests and promotion to 12th mon.Jasmyn Crowe, fighting at sixth mon, won both her bouts to move up to 9th mon.Rebecca Colquitt, also at sixth mon, clinched eighth mon after claiming victory in one of her fights. The boys continued the success as Peter Marshall took tenth mon and Liam Christian ninth mon.
